Morning Free Association: The Mighty Won’t Fall

Last night was the first of a back-to-back Bruins roadtrip against undefeated teams. The Bruins had the chance to play spoiler for a Florida Panthers team that entered the game with a record of 6-0-0 and for the Bruins to gain 2 points on their division leader. Did the Bruins succeed in theor attempt to fell Goliath?

NO, they didn’t. In fact the game was kind of painful to watch beyond the first period when the B’s outshot the Panthers 15-5 but left the period tied at one all. The sole Bruins score was by Charlie Coyle which was deflected by a couple of Panthers’ blades.

That would be the only bright moment of the game. The Bruins came out flat in the second with only 2 shots on goal. Meanwhile, Florida took the possession advantage the Bruins basically handed them, taking 14 shots on goal and scoring the go ahead goal. They added one more with Linus Ullmark in net and another with an empty net. The Bruins lost 4-1.

It’s only 6 games in so it’s no time to panic. This is not the team that started the season. Nick Foligno is on IR. Craig Smith is day-to-day with an unknown injury. Curtis Lazar is playing his first game in weeks. The team called up Jack Studnicka again from Providence to take over 2C while moving Charlie Coyle to 2RW. That yielded an early result when the team was in teh game.

But the Bruins got beat in front of the net, in the neutral zone, and in the physical game. Charlie Coyle had to get his lip stitched up. Brad Marchand left the ice for a short time that could have been equipment or something else. It seems in the two seasons since the Bruins last saw the Fancy Cats they really bulked up their lineup. It’s also offensively deep.

In 2020, Florida was a seller trading one of their top players, Vincent Trocheck for many players (one of them Erik Haula) from the Hurricanes. In that deadline, they also traded a forward to Toronto, Denis Malgin, for a different forward, Mason Marchment. Marchment scored the first goal against the Bruins last night.

In 2021, the Panthers were buyers taking Sam Bennett from Calgary. They later re-signed him in the summer. Over the summer, the team traded for Buffalo’s Sam Reinhart, who also extended with the team.

Florida is putting it together. It remains to be seen if they can continue to dominate but we’ll have another chance to see these two team play again on Saturday night.

The first period was good but a little frustrating – Bruins dominated, but came away with a tied score. Then they forgot how to play hockey for a while. After a bad first half, Ullmark remembered how to tend goal, but it wasn’t nearly enough. It was interesting to see Studs with Hall & Coyle, but Hall-Coyle-Nosek (from a previous game) was a more effective combo.

That must have been a fascinating day to attend a church service 200 or so years ago.

Hi folks,

I went to bed after the first goal, so basically saw the best part of the game live! No real disgrace in losing to a team on that kind of a roll. Panthers looked great, credit where it’s due. Bs might’ve got a couple more but Bob was in top form.

Darts tournament last night in town. An early exit for me but good to be out. The teams league is due to start next week but seems a few teams are struggling for numbers. Lots of people have moved out of London during the pandemic. So we’ll see what happens there.

Good morning!
Couldn’t watch, I guess that’s a good thing. The big problem is on the back end where the Bruins need more help. Maybe more time together will solidify this group. I hope so. I think it was last season that Satan81 stated that Garlic was the most underrated player in the NHL…. I don’t think he will be underrated anymore. Dominant two way player!
I think we are going to the metal store today! Welders fantasy world! I need stainless for a small counter and square tube for the foot rail at the bar! I made our stair railing from square stock and want to have the foot rail match.
