Morning Free Association: A Well-Oiled Machine

The Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers honored the late Colby Cave last night at the Garden.

Afterward, they played a game.

It’s not really a surprise that the Bruins lost last night. Defensively, they were pretty bad. They managed to score 3 goals and take the lead 3 times with those goals however, they’re still having a problem tying together 60 minute efforts, which is something they really need to work on.

For a team that is defensive minded, they are having a hell of a time trying to figure out which pairings work the best. Somehow, Matt Grzelcyk and Brandon Carlo keep getting paired up and they aren’t clicking. Carlo seems to play better with Mike Reilly, but he’s down on the third pair trying to help Connor Clifton justify his top six spot.

Once this team gets down by a goal, it’s difficult for this team to bounce back. When they go down by 2, it’s basically over. The Bruins allowed the Oilers to score thrice on them in the third period, 2 by Leo Draisaitl alone. They managed to hold the lead that Brandon Carlo’s late second period goal gave them for over 8 minutes; prior to that the longest they held the lead was 44 seconds.

Anyway, here are the Bruins goals, including one by My Boyest of Boys, who then gave it back to the Oilers the next time.

That was a frustrating game – I didn’t have particularly high hopes for it, though I think the Bruins have done surprisingly well against the Oilers for most of the McDavid era.
There’s something missing from the team right now – it’s hard to put my finger on it. They aren’t entirely sure what they’re doing defensively in some situations and give up big chances. Not sure how much of that is pairing chemistry and how much is play design. They’re still a jumble in the middle six, too.

I can see how they could get to where they need to be, but I could also see them not getting there.

Morning all. Power went out this morning so I had to get ready for work by flashlight. Who knows what I actually look like!

Good morning!
The D pairings…. chemistry is huge, i think you can’t have Cliffy and Grizz together. Clifton and Carlo? Dunno. I’d like to buy a defenseman.
Jo and i will be driving to Georgia for Thanksgiving. A nice rainy day today. We’ll spend it planning.

I’d be surprised if we don’t add a Dman at some point. I wonder who’s on the trading block.

Any promising kids in the system? I didn’t see too much of preseason but I think there were one or two. Ahcan and someone else. At this point it’s got to be worth giving them a chance, no?

Isn’t that like a thousand miles? What would that take – three days? My idea of hell. I hate travelling by car!

It’s about 17 hours. Just down the road a piece. I love traveling by car! Van in our case. Weather will be a factor, but we are thinking of splitting the drive in half and finding some fun along the way. Bringing a boat for ocean surfing as we will stay on St Simon’s Island

Morning folks.

Well, we knew that was a game where the Bs couldn’t afford any silly mistakes, and there were too many. Again. At least Pasta finally got some puck luck.

Something I forgot to mention about Wednesday night. We got a message from one of our team in the morning to say he’d had “a nice win on the NFL” and would get the drinks in. We assumed he’d won a few hundred pounds on a parlay or something, but it turned out he’d scooped the top prize in one of those Draft Kings type things and picked up $26,000! I’ll have to start following his tips!

Wow! That’s quite a score! He should be buying the drinks for quite awhile!
I would have a better chance with the lottery!
