Morning Free Association: Jakub Zboril Gets His Shot

Back in 2015, the Boston Bruins had 3 draft picks in a row — 13th, 14th and 15th overall — in the middle of the first round thanks in part to a pre-draft trade of RFA Dougie Hamilton to Calgary. Each of those 3 picks were controversial in their own way, mostly due to the fact that each player was drafted higher than where experts had predicted. In his first draft after the dismissal of Peter Chiarelli, Don Sweeney chose a Czech defenseman, Jakub Zboril, with the first of those picks. The middle pick, Jake DeBrusk, made the roster during training camp in 2017 after spending his 2015-16 season in the WHL and a season in Providence in 2016-17. The last of the 3, Zach Senyshyn, has yet to establish himself even as a part-time NHLer. At this point, the 2015 draft has had the ire of many Bruins fans, especially since the 16th pick for the Islanders was Mathew Barzal. One of the players that also caught the wrath of fans is Jakub Zboril.

“It was especially hard the year after the draft…I was just getting roasted every single day,” Jakub Zboril told the media yesterday at his availability. Zboril discovered that nothing positive can come from the doom scrolling of fan comments and he has since removed his social media apps from his phone, except for Facebook, which he keeps for close family and friends.

Of course, the last year hasn’t been easy either. Zboril has had to wait for his chance to make the lineup. Last season after a hit by Jacob Trouba of the Rags, Zboril ended up with a concussion that caused him to miss time and messed with his play. He says that he’s better now but after that hit, he was worried about another head injury.

Zboril has admitted to having sleep issues which have negatively affected his play. He worked through that to develop better habits by reaching out to veterans and professionals. So it sounds like he’s got himself in a better headspace. This is what has finally led to his current opportunity on the Bruins’ roster. He has the talent and Bruce Cassidy likes what he sees.

In the meantime, it’s important to note that Mike Reilly will not be a healthy scratch forever. Cassidy expects to play him on Saturday but that it’s not the end of Zboril’s playing time.

Good morning!
I’ve always claimed that defensemen take longer to develop than forwards. Maybe Zboril is ready. Let’s hope so. More youth!
Watched Untold Crime and Penalties yeeterday. Jo didn’t work at the rink back then… and is glad of that. The place was a zoo.
Two of my friends worked the scoreboard for the Trashers. They were shown how to cheat on the clock. Take an extra second to start the clock if the Trashers were losing late. Reset the clock to add a second or two. No one will notice if the clock goes from 1:21 to 1:24 when it starts. Conversely, if the Trashers were winning, reset the clock so that when you startbit, it gods from 1:27 to 1:23. They would get a signal…. and it was advisable to pay attention and do what you’re v told to do. Wow. It was crazy

Hi folks,

Sign of the times – I at first thought the headline was a vaccine reference …

It’s a shame he was targeted by trolls – it’s not his fault he was picked! I can understand fans’ frustration but come on, it’s six years ago. Let it go. Look how many teams passed on Pasta. Sometimes the obvious move is the right one, sometimes not, these things tend to even themselves out.

I fancy seeing that Danbury Thrashers thing on Netflix, though I doubt it’s on the UK version. Might have to put the VPN to work.

I’ve been pretty disappointed in Zboril, but one just doesn’t troll a guy for not living up to the expectations of his draft position. Brett Connolly would get hounded out of the league if that were an acceptable thing!
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned as a fan, it’s that scouts really are guessing on limited evidence and draft position doesn’t mean diddly squat. If a player isn’t an obviously exceptional talent – who will get picked in the top 4 – then it’s really a crap shoot.
Sure, you can look at 100 guys and extrapolate a trend – guys picked 1st-5th pretty much all make a career in the NHL and guys picked late first round average a career of a few seasons, but when talking a particular player, any one guy can flame out, or get injured, or conversely find his stride when he hits 22 and his adult muscle mass.

Oh absolutely – it’s a gamble basically.

Educated guesses! And, yes. As players mature physically, the boys are separated from the men. I always think of Chris Pronger. The Hartford Whalers just could not wait for the boy to become the man. Then the man dominated games for two decades!

The Trashers… Well worth a watch. It paints Talents et al in a brighter light than they deserve, but is accurate. Danbury loved the Trashers. Fans of the defunct New Haven Nighthawks would make the 45 minute trip. They were a sensation. I was never a fan. I would be working on the other ice surface most game nights. Offered Trashed games, I never was interested in those games. The poor linesmen pulled some heavy weight in those games. I could make the same dough with no hassle next door, thaks.

Speaking of Danbury… I was streaming the Pride @ Whale games from Danbury Ice Arena last weekend. They have the Hat Tricks logo on center ice – I’d forgotten the FPHL even existed!

As hockey goes, the FPHL is affordable entertainment. A couple of the teams that followed the Trashers tried to recreate that atmosphere. The current league is good enough. Not a lot of goonery. The Hattricks have a junior program, as well. Grow the game!

The rise of the internet has made it way too easy to say mean stuff that you would never say to someone’s face. I know I’ve been guilty of it but I’ve really tried to remember the good old rule of “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” (It has also helped my mental health when I focus on the things I do like and put my energy towards enjoying those things even more!)
