Morning Free Association: Eleven Forwards

Last night, the Boston Bruins iced 11 Forwards instead of 12. Why? Because everyone is testing positive for Covid. And they couldn’t even ice 7 D because they couldn’t afford it, so John Moore was “sent” down to Providence.

Yesterday, the Bruins placed more players in Covid protocol: Jeremy Swayman, Anton Blidh, and Trent Frederic. One player slated to replace one of the ailing forwards, Oskar Steen, also was placed in the protocol sometime before the game. It’s hard to justify playing games when you don’t have a full complement of players. Former Bruins goalie and current NESN analyst suggests shutting things down and I think he’s right.

Why continue to act like no one else will test positive? Right now they have 7 players and several staff that have tested positive. And with the highly transmissible Delta variant still the dominant strain and even more contagious Omicron gaining traction all over, it’s really easy for players to pass around the virus even fully vaccinated. That’s what happened in Vancouver. That’s what happened in Calgary. And that’s what is happening in Boston.

Having one less forward didn’t stop the Bruins from taking shots since they out shot the Isles 41-28. But they failed to connect on all but one from Mike Reilly late in the third. Bruins were dropped by the terrible Isles, 3-1. This was only the Isles 8th win and their second in their new building in Elmont, NY.

Reportedly the Bruins are staying tonight on Long Island so as to not strand any players that will potentially test positive in Montreal where they play on Saturday night. If the game on Saturday night is played, and that’s a big if due to the Bruins Covid problems, they may not play in front of fans; last night the local board of health banned fans from attending the Flyers – Canadiens game.

It remains to be seen if the Bruins will shut things down for a bit. I think they should.

Go out and get boosted! I did on Wednesday and even though I’m not feeling super great right now (I had a fever), I am happy that I have that extra layer of protection against serious illness.

Morning all. For a second I thought the “Eleven Forwards” was going to be some sort of 12 Days of Christmas thing. Eleven forwards forwarding! (I’m tired)

Crazy wind last night. Power went out at some point during the night. Woke up at 4am when the power came back on and everything was booting back up.

Looks like a lovely day now though, on the covered bridge cam!

It is nice out! Took a quick walk on my lunch break. One of businesses in my complex had a grill going making lunch for their employees!

Good morning!
Listening to JJ Cale this morning. One of the greatest lesser knowns of the music world.
Got another round of disc in during yesterday’s warm weather… the course in Bennington is 3.1 miles of hiking, so we feel like we got some exercise in.
Anyone heard about Bergy confronting Cassiday over his rather public criticism of Grizz? I wouldn’t mind Sacco as head coach.

Must be a frustrating time. Lots of players not at their best. I wonder if Cassidy only bawled out Grizz or whether he was just the one that pushed Bergy over the edge.

Morning gang,

I have to agree with Mr Raycroft. It’s daft if teams can’t even field a full compliment of players.

I only saw the first half of the game. Was pretty obvious the direction it was taking. Who was the Bs backup goalie?

Lots of English soccer games are off due to lack of available players. The vaccination rate among them isn’t impressive. Still, I hope not too much is called off for too long, because I quite like having a job …

I would like a job! Jo isn’t paying me all that well… wink
Seriously, a little do re mi wouldn’t be frowned upon right now!
I think leagues have to look at the hard reality of our not so brave new world. Schedule 75% of normal amount of games, shut teams down as neccessary, hope everyone gets x amount of games in, go from there.
This is a survival season… make the playoffs, hope for the best. Expanding the playoffs? As long as it doesn’t let the Habs in! grin

They’d have to expand the playoffs rather a lot to get the Habs in the way things are going!
