Morning Free Association: Willie O’Ree’s Banner Ceremony

Tonight’s the night! Willie O’Ree will have his number 22 lifted to rafters and retired to celebrate his breaking the color barrier in the NHL 64 years ago. Originally this ceremony was to take place last year but was pushed back due to COVID restrictions. Tonight the fans will be there to witness it and appreciate him.

Besides being the first black player to play in the NHL he has built a legacy of introducing children to the sport and inspiring more players of color.

But the work never ends.

Karson Kuhlman is no longer a Boston Bruin. He was placed on waivers, likely to be placed on the taxi squad, but was claimed by the Seattle Kraken.

Other News:

  • Tuukka Rask will start tonight
  • Connor Clifton is back from Covid protocol and could start tonight.
  • Nick Foligno is back skating but will not be back tonight
  • Trent Frederic and John Moore have not returned to skating
  • Brad Marchand was the NHL’s First Star of the Week

Watching Habs vs Yotes MLKDay matinee. Two worst teams. Can we relegate the Habs?

Morning all. Congrats to Wille O’Ree! And they should also retire his fedora because no one can look as dapper as he can.

Felt bad for the next town over from me (Warren) on Saturday. -11 degrees in the morning and most of the town lost power so a lot of people didn’t have heat for a good 5-6 hours. eek

Whoa! That’s a long time without power at -11!

Yo, how many people can wear a fedora at all? You gotta be dapper!

So, if you live in snow country… (oh, i do, i do) and you buy a really tall vehicle…. one needs to figure out how to get snow off the roof! Fortunately, we have a roof rake for the house (yup, need to take some of the load off). It was great. Now, more snowblowing!

In Slovakia, particularly in the countryside, the houses have extreme sloping roofs that come down very low, for snow reasons.

I use a soft(ish) bristled push-broom. It’s much faster than the snow brushes they sell at every gas station (it’s ~30″ wide, after all). Neither of our cars are all that tall, really. A small roof-rake might be just the thing.

I’ve got a big roof-rake with extension poles for the house – I rarely use it though, especially since it is prone to dumping the dislodged snow in my face. And I mean a LOT of snow dumped in my face.
Though it does look remarkably like this:

Morning all,

sorry to lose Kuhlman but I guess he was always going to struggle for a permanent spot in Boston. Hope he does well in Seattle. I hope no-one calls ME to tell me I’ve got to move 3,000 miles away today!

Wouldn’t that be a kick in the head!

I’m pretty bummed out about losing Kuhlman. I always figured that he could never be put on waivers because he’d be snapped up. And lo & behold…
I think Seattle was literally the first team in the waivers order, too.

Good morning!
Awww, sorry to see Kuhlman go…. i always thought he sort of a mini Marchand. Sometimes he fools Jack.. the 83 only enhanced that image.
Been a long time coming for Mr O’Ree. These pregame ceremonies often take there toll on the home team. Everyone gets all wound up to play, then sits through an emotional ceremony. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen tonight against a very good Carolina club.
14 – 16 inches of snow here yesterday, another 2 or 3 last night. It all cleaned up pretty quick. Our town has that true winter look now with a foot of snow on every roof.

Wow!
We got a bit of slush yesterday, then a sprinkling of cold rain. I think we actually have less snow pack than we did on Saturday.

It does look like the quintessential New England winter post card out there!
