Yesterday the NHL’s premier annual event, The Winter Classic, was played at Fenway Park between the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins and the hometown heroes, the Boston Bruins. And it didn’t disappoint because the guys we wanted to win did just that.
The Bruins hinted that the would have a pregame fit.

It was Patrice Bergeron’s idea to dress up as Red Sox today.
“He was adamant,” says Nick Foligno. “I’m glad we went old school.”

Prior to puck drop, former Red Sox and Bruins legends gathered for the ceremonial puckdrop.

As for the game, it took both teams some time to really make it a game with Kasperi Kapanen scoring the first goal nearly midway through the game and taking a 1-0 lead into the second intermission. During that time in the dressing room, Nick Foligno, playing in his first WC game, took over and had some words for the team.
Nick Foligno addressed the room after the second period:
Jake DeBrusk on his message:
“It’s a dream come true. Don’t waste it. We’re the best third period team in the league.
“Let’s go prove it.”

Was that the motivation the team needed? Possibly because the team came alive in the final period proving once again that they are indeed the best third period team in hockey. Both goals came from the same player: Jake DeBrusk.

Linus Ullmark was no slouch in this game, turning away 26 of 27. Not only that, he tried his hand at a goalie goal.

Jim Montgomery on Linus Ullmark:
“If it wasn’t for him, we’d probably be down 3-0 after two.”

In the final seconds, Ullmark with some help from teammates held off the final surge.

As usual, TNT avoided showing the Goalie Hugs and we had to rely on the faithful to film it for us.

USA crushed Germany 11-1 at the WJC yesterday. Slovakia had a hell of a run, but lost in o/t to Canada on a Connor Bedard highlight reel goal.
Morning all.
Was cool to see Bell Biv Devoe do the National Anthem. And the “throwing out the first puck” was a fun touch as well.
Watched Glass Onion over the weekend. Really enjoyed it. Thought the cast was great and lots of fun bits of dialogue.
Happy Tuesday!
Ah, we were going to watch Glass Onion, then realised we hadn’t seen the first one, so watched that instead! But that was really good so we will definitely see GO!
Good morning,
. Jo and i actually made it to midnight. Back to the never ending aquire firewood thing. Thank goodness wood is practically free here. Energy getting expensive.
Listened on the radio, as usual. Can’t break that trend. Watched the highlights a couple times. What a great atmosphere. What a great day for those who could attend.
We got out early to Bennington, VT, where the snow is gone. Took Guapo to disc golf. 2.something mile hike plus all the extra dog miles… the little shit is still sleeping.
Had neighbors and a couple others over NYE. All went home by 10… old folks…
Oh yes – Happy New Year! I forgot this is the first MFA of 2023! We let Leah stay up for the first time. She was less sleepy than the rest of us at midnight!
Ugh, the kids may have been exposed to covid. So far testing negative, but feeling like crap… the one ray of sunshine in this is that we must keep Guapo Diablo four more days! Yay, sort of…
Oh no! Lots of bugs around – flu is making a big comeback over here. Hope you’re feeling better soon.
We’ve got a 5-tuple of communicable diseases floating around – COVID, flu, RSV, seasonal cold & strep. In spite of the politics & general weariness, health officials are low-key recommending public mask use again. (no one is doing so). I suspect that it’s not that much worse than 5 years ago plus a covid resurgence. Boston is apparently getting a quick ramp-up in cases.
I’m getting antsy about being in some public spaces again – I’m in month 6 since my (pre-Omicron!) booster. I got my flu shot a few months back, but GH keeps trying to get vaccinated and keeps having to answer “yes, I had cold-like symptoms in the past two weeks” on the online schedule-bot and being told “No, try again next week”
Jo has symptoms, i’m okay, the kids are hurting… Guapo is incorrigible!
I feel like the walls are closing in on me. I’m the one of the last in my town that hasn’t gotten Covid yet.
Ah, you’re one of the few “Novids”, eh? Sonia hasn’t had it either, I don’t know of many others!
LB, your mom has had it 3 or 4 times, no? How is she feeling?
Yeah, she had it last month for the third time, I believe. She was quite ill but not as bad as the first time. No long-term issues, though, thankfully.
I’m also a Novid!
Apparently, I’m the maverick in my family. My brothers and my aunt all went to bed by 10:30. I’m not sure I see the point of leaving a NYE gathering before midnight. Join a countdown, drink a toast, watch a firework.
That said, I haven’t gone out on NYE in years. Too many “It’s way too cold to be out here”, “It’s raining”, “I can’t really see the fireworks from here” situations.
I definitely didn’t make it to midnight! I’m not sure I even made it to 10!
Morning,
An entertaining game, if not the highest quality. Fraught finish – I didn’t realise the clock had run down, and I’m not sure Ullmark did either!
I didn’t know the Pens were owned by Fenway Sports Group. Ha! Two home teams!
Holiday season all over for us. Leah back at school and I’m working the next five days. And it’s raining. Time to start the diet in time for next month’s Slovakia trip!
John Henry (owner of Fenway Sports Group) was floating around, and got booed. Then there was this gem:
Surviving Grady is the best Twitter account.
Gotta love that shirt.
