I won’t be talking about the Seattle game today because the Bruins made a big move. They traded Craig Smith and picks to and acquired Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals. And they got a third team in on the deal to retain salary!

In this transaction they managed to send away a $3.1M cap hit (Smith) and gained a cap hit of $5.1M reduced by 75% (50% from the Caps, 25% from the Wild) which only counts as $1.275M against the cap (Orlov) and a cheap wing in Hathaway at $1.5M, saving $325K against the cap. Identifying needs at RW and D while losing no prospects is a great deal.
Both Hathaway and Orlov are expected to meet up with the team in Vancouver for Saturday night’s game. In the meantime for the Game against the Kraken, the Bruin played 11F / 7D by bringing in Jakub Zboril.
Don Sweeney was asked if this is the end of his deadline moves
Sweeney on if the Bruins will continue to assess trades between now and March 3.
"You just never know. … Not necessarily going to be overly aggressive. We really like our team."

Sweeney says Bruins do not have to make another move for cap purposes.

Well, that’s a relief.
Here’s hoping that Craig Smith has success in Washington.
Thank you for all you did in the Spoked-B, Smitty.
Wishing you all the best in Washington. pic.twitter.com/LIkaKIZBHN

Cam Stewart, sports broadcaster in Toronto, says he’s tired of seeing the Bruins every night. “They ram it down my throat. I’m sick of them. There announcer sounds like he’s had three bottles of whiskey by the second period…” Wow
1) Having the choice to watch does not mean you have to watch
2) Toronto
Morning all.
Upstairs Neighbor Friend Suzan and I have an exciting day planned tomorrow. We are going to Walmart! (Yeah, we need to get out more.
)
You and Susan need to slow yourselves down. Walmart is too exciting!
Good morning,
Great move by Sweeny. Orlov is a very good defender who playsmore physical game than his size would hint at…. much like Cliffy, but better IMO. Orlov is a proven playoff performer, as well. He was a driving force in the Cap’s Cup run in 2018. Hathaway will add grit. I thought the Bs had enough grit, but i trust in Don.
Listened to the game in bed, as GH suggested. We both made it to the end. Wow! More evidence of this team’s determination!
Getting ready for another deep freeze. -2f tonight. Fortunately, it will be short lived. Flurries all day. Radar shows us at the end of the lake effect snow from Lake Ontario.
At least it was worth staying up till the end! (Not for me – it finished at 5.45am here, not long before I got up)
I really wanted to turn in at the period breaks, but it was too loopy a game. And the constant grunge music licks were messing with my chill. The late night did not do me any favors this morning.
I liked the many Nirvana clips. Kurt would probably have hated it…
Morning!
Crazy game last night and a gritty win. Swayman not on his best form but the goals weren’t all his fault and everyone is allowed an off night.
Have been looking a bit into Orlov’s numbers. Seems like a great pickup. Glad we didn’t part with Cliffy, although he’s surely most likely to be the one to make way, isn’t he?
Not so chuffed with getting Hathaway but presumably he’ll be a fourth-liner if he’s a regular starter at all.
Went into a charity shop this morning and “Don’t wanna miss a thing” was playing. Been stuck in my head ever since.
Steven Tyler goes all crooner!
Orlov is a solid D-man. I see him like a more effective Grzelcyk sort of guy. I would expect that Gryz & Cliffy would be competing for the 6th spot. Gryz is better, but Clifton is more physical.
Hathaway is an asshole, but he is a solid bottom-6 player, and a strong playoff performer. Not sure if he or Frederick take the 3RW role vs the 4th. It seems kind of odd to have him on the Bruins – I would think that there is still bad blood from previous interactions. If this were the 2010s, I’d wanna see a line of Greer-Frederick-Hathaway, just for the fireworks, but that era is gone.
As Satan81 commented, the Bruins got douchier
