MFA: No Norris Trophy for Hampus

Hampus Lindholm will not be winning the Norris Trophy this year. How do I know? Well, he didn’t make the list of finalists. The three finalists were Erik Karlsson (who will win), Adam Fox (because of course), and Cale Makar (he’s the new Bobby Orr, right?)

About a month ago on a TNT broadcast, Wayne Gretzky said something about how an award should be created to honor the defensive defenseman, that the Norris Trophy was truly about the offensive defenseman. I can’t really disagree with him since defenseman who have good years on on one of the puck tend tend to get ignored while their higher score brethren always will be nominated. for instance the eventual winner, Erik Karlsson, had a phenomenal year offensively amassing 101 points (25-76–101) while still managing to be a -26. Fox and Makar are on more successful teams so they had positive ratings while amassing 72 and 66 points respectively. Poor Hampus was not so close with his 53 points and +49 rating.

It’s funny that all three nominees are currently out of the playoffs; San Jose was the 29th team in the league while both the Rangers and Avalanche were bumped off in the first round, just like Hampus.

Anyway, he has more time to try again and maybe some day the voters will allow other defenseman to be considered. Until then we’ll have defensively suspect defensemen winning the award.

It’s a Bank Holiday weekend (and some posh bloke is being given a fancy hat tomorrow) so of course it’s incessant rain for the next four days here!

Good morning,
One of the other factors in no nomination for The Hampus is Charlie Macavoy. Any Bruin votes are split, right off the bat.
Barkov is waking up. Bad news for Toronto.
Heading to CT this morn. Disc golf, then pick up Guapo Diablo! Yay!

Morning,

I hate that the Norris is virtually an award for the D man who scores most goals. That’s not their job! Still, Chara won it a few years ago so it can’t always have been like that.

How can the only team to allow less than 200 goals on the season not have anyone nominated for the defence trophy?

I gained a new respect for Karlsson during a Sens-Bs playoff series, having previously considered him effectively a forward. No idea what he’s been doing this year. Racking up points apparently!

Big day in Division 1A of the Worlds! GB need at least a point against Italy tonight (unless Poland lose to Romania this afternoon, which isn’t likely).

Romania have been outshot 11-2 but are 1-0 up after one!

The Norris really isn’t what we want it to be. It’s so frustrating when the team usually has great defense and often has a player who should be getting defensive accolades.

Still, Chara won it a few years ago so it can’t always have been like that.

Well, that was the year he had his career high in goals scored…

Good luck! I hadn’t been paying much attention to international play, so I missed this situation.

I hadn’t realised that, LOL. Was that the year he got a hat-trick?

GB got relegated from the top level last year – which wasn’t a surprised because the three top forwards were all injured. Hopefully next year they can get back to getting thrashed by Canada and Czechia!

Poland turned it around this morning, so they have earned promotion along with either us or the Italians …
